Inspector Richard Burgess
Inspector, Safer Neighbourhoods Team, South Yorkshire Police
Richard is a Police Inspector in South Yorkshire Police and with over twenty-five years service, he has worked in Uniform, CID and strategic and public orders roles throughout South Yorkshire and in other parts of the country. He graduated from Sheffield University in 1993 and joined South Yorkshire Police the same year. He was initially deployed to Sheffield City Centre where he remained for 7 years. During this time Richard worked in uniform response/beat duties, CID and eventually became a Tutor Constable responsible for the practical training of new recruits.
Richard was promoted to Sergeant during which time he undertook corporate development duties on behalf of senior managers and subsequently started to perform the temporary role of Inspector on a uniform team at Attercliffe Police station, Sheffield.
In 2009 Richard was promoted to the rank of Inspector where he initially worked in Barnsley on a Response team, but then became the Neighbourhood Inspector, responsible for Royston, Cudworth, Wombwell, Goldthorpe and Hoyland. In 2014 he moved back to Sheffield to take up the role of Neighbourhood Inspector in the north east area of Sheffield. As part of this role, Richard was responsible for serving communities in Burngreave, Page Hall, Parson Cross, Southey, Shiregreen, Ecclesfield and High Green as well as all the areas in between.
In 2017 he moved to take up the Inspectors post in the joint South Yorkshire Police/Sheffield City Council Safer Neighbourhood Team. The role of the team is to deal with persistent, complex and serious issues of crime and disorder in local communities across the whole of Sheffield. Richard also takes the lead in Sheffield for issues around Hate Crime and mental health. Core to all of these duties is the work he coordinates around cohesion and engagement within our communities in Sheffield.
Richard is a qualified public order Bronze Commander, regularly working public order operations, football matches and community events. He has been deployed to a variety of locations across the country including Scotland and London.
