Meeting Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid
It was great to meet Lord Mayor Magid Magid at the opening of the Spirit of Africa festival on Friday at Crucible Corner. There was celebratory dancing and music on stage outside the Crucible for the festival celebrating the African continent and the African diaspora. The festival was organised by Utopia Theatre resident at Sheffield Theatres, and directed by Moji Kareem who has brought it to our city of Sheffield.
Cohesion Sheffield are keen to support young leaders in Sheffield and the theme of the Cohesion Sheffield Conference in March this year was developing city leaders of tomorrow. At our conference it was especially significant to see young people attending from Firvale School and Parkwood Academy, who actually sat on the Lord Mayor’s chair and neighbouring bench seats during the conference. I was therefore especially pleased to speak to our Lord Mayor who is Sheffield’s youngest Lord Mayor and who arrived in Sheffield from Somalia as a refugee as a child. We discussed how we might work together to support more young people into leadership and we hope that we can take this forward by supporting some of the causes for young people at the heart of Magid’s work.
