Welcoming Asylum Seekers and Refugees.
Sheffield was the first ‘City of Sanctuary’ and started the national movement. City of Sanctuary Sheffield holds a weekly multi agency drop-in on a Wednesday afternoon at Victoria Hall Methodist Church. Any asylum seeker or refugee can come for a cuppa and a chat at the conversation tables and get help, advice and support from 8 different agencies including local solicitors, the Red Cross, ASSIST, sexual health advice, and housing.
G4S, who hold the asylum contract in Sheffield, work with the council and the GP practice in the city centre to ensure all new arrivals go to the Mulberry GP Practice next door to the drop in on the Wednesday morning for a health screening appointment. Volunteers from the City of Sanctuary Welcome Project explain about the afternoon drop-in so people can get all their health and support needs attended to in one day in the same place.
